Our Approach
Political advocacy is about creating change in our government system. This means pressing for change at a political/policy level, and focusing our efforts on:
- Directly influencing elected decision-makers or those around them
- Mobilizing our grassroots network to raise relevant issues within the public through the media, outreach and public events
Political advocacy can involve a range of ideas (i.e. advocating for the untying of aid) and techniques (i.e. letter writing, meeting with MPs), but the uniting factor is that all of these efforts contribute to creating change in our political system. There is an important distinction between advocating for change at a political level and advocating for other changes, for instance pressing to get more fair trade at your university.
Direct Engagement
EWB works directly with politicians and policymakers in the Canadian government, urging them to support more relevant policies and effective interventions for tackling global poverty. With thousands of knowledgeable, politically engaged members across the country, it’s our scope and the strength of our network that makes us unique, allowing us to meet with MP’s in constituencies around the country.
Public mobilization
Across Canada, roughly 50,000 citizens have come together to affect change through a broad range of actions, forming Canada’s largest active network of people taking steps to reduce the scourge of global poverty.
